Where to buy Adire — Nigerian indigo tie-dye

Adire is the resist-dyed cloth of the Yoruba of south-west Nigeria, historically dyed a deep indigo and patterned by tying, stitching or hand-painting cassava paste before the dye bath. Today Adire spans classic indigo and a bright modern palette, worn as everyday wear, work pieces and statement outfits.

Theyutes brings Adire from Nigerian makers into one bag and one checkout — fabric by the yard, plus ready-to-wear dresses, tops and shirts. Here is how to recognise real Adire, how to care for it, and a live selection to shop.

Adire techniques to look for

Adire Eleko is patterned with cassava-paste resist and hand-painted motifs. Adire Oniko uses tied raffia to resist the dye (true tie-dye). Adire Alabere is stitched-resist. Genuine hand-dyed Adire has small, characterful irregularities — no two pieces are identical.

Frequently asked questions

Is Adire the same as tie-dye?
Tie-dye is one Adire technique (Adire Oniko). Adire more broadly covers several Yoruba resist-dye methods including stitch-resist and cassava-paste hand-painting, traditionally in indigo.
How do I wash Adire so it doesn't fade?
Hand-wash gently in cold water, separately at first (natural indigo can bleed), and dry in shade rather than direct sun. Genuine hand-dyed Adire softens beautifully with careful washing.
Can I buy Adire as ready-made clothing?
Yes. On Theyutes you'll find both Adire fabric by the yard and ready-to-wear — dresses, kaftans, shirts and tops — from Nigerian makers, each with its real naira price.
